Civic administration to launch a drive against beggars on city roads

Indian Express: Deputy Mayor Prasanna Jagtap on Thursday directed the civic administration to launch a drive against beggars on city roads after all party leaders pointed out the seriousness of the issue.

Raising the issue at the general body meet, Congress corporator Arvind Shinde said the number of beggars were increasing in the city and causing inconvenience to citizens. At every traffic signal, Shinde said, beggars of all ages throng the vehicles. Head of anti-encroachment cell Ramesh Shelar said a special drive would be taken against the beggars soon.

MNS corporator Kiishor Shinde said the civic administration has failed to keep a check on illegal hoardings and sky signs installed in the city. The civic body has been losing revenue as there has been no action against these hoardings and sky signs.

Shelar said 2,223 skysigns have the required permission. Directions have been given to initiate action those installed illegally.

Meanwhile, the general body approved the proposal of 20 per cent hike in fees on hoardings and sky signs.

The corporators further demanded that the deadline for PMC health scheme registration for those below poverty line citizens be extended.

The general body also approved the proposal to give contract to Pune Amateur Athletics’ Association for the maintenance of civic-owned Sanas ground though BJP protested against the move saying it was illegal to give contract without calling for tenders.

Action sought against Mulshi Road toll booth.

Corporators took the civic administration to task for failing to initiate action against the toll booth opened on Mulshi Road by the state Public Works Department (PWD) within jurisdiction of Pune Municipal Corporation.

The issue was raised by local corporator Shankar Kemse during the general body meet. Kemse said the PWD constructed the Mulshi road but started toll booth in PMC jurisdiction forcing the residents in the area to pay up to enter the city.

“The security guards at the toll booth have been forcing the residents in the adjoining areas to pay toll. Citizens, who protest, are harrased and beaten up,” he said.

Additional city engineer Vivek Kharwadkar said the PWD had gone ahead with setting up the toll booth despite being informed that it’s in the PMC jurisdiction.

This irked the corporators who demanded immediate action against the state department and removal of the toll booth. However, the administration clarified that the matter was subjudice.

The elected representatives have asked deputy Mayor Prasanna Jagtap to issue an order for immediate removal of the toll booth.
