Soon, students can use mother’s name in school records
Times of India: In a path-breaking decision, the Maharashtra government will allow students to use their mother’s maiden name in school records from the next academic session.
The move has been hailed by single mothers like divorcees, adoptive mothers and widows, who perforce have to append their husbands’ names in their children’s school forms.
“The proposal has been passed and a government resolution (GR) will be issued soon,” school education minister Balasaheb Thorat told TOI on Sunday during his visit to the city.
Single mothers had approached the government a few months back with the request to allow their names to be used in school forms. “Some of these women had said that even after they had divorced their husbands, their children were allowed to use only their fathers’ names in school forms,” said Thorat.
The state government will implement the change in the secondary school code, Thorat said. “The GR will state that educational documents, forms and certificates will make a separate provision for the mother’s name and surname,” he added.
Sujata Salunke, a single mother from the city, lauded the state government’s decision. “It is a very supportive move. This change should have been implemented long ago. Single mothers must use this provision, otherwise it will remain on paper only. Many single mothers feel stigmatised to use their maiden name. Now, when the government is making the necessary provisions, these mothers should get their names on school documents,” she said.
