“Don’t let icons restrict your creativity” – Zakir Hussain
Indian Express: He had a big question mark on his face when addressed as a youth icon. When quizzed about the same, tabla maestro, Zakir Hussain, explained his reaction with strong statements and contagious enthusiasm- It is parents who should be role models for their children. And if they aren’t, then there is something terribly wrong. I can be an inspiration but not role model.
With the forthcoming event- Chirantan, Hussain has plans to create something called- soundscape which in his own words is- creating multiple sounds using a number of tablas. “This would not only allow me to experiment and widen my horizon but also establish tabla as an unusual sound instrument,” says Hussain who was in the city for the announcement of Chirantan that is taking place today at Garware College.
It’s been long that music lovers have seen Hussain performing on the Sawai stage and commenting on his absence in the concert, he said, “I have performed in Sawai for 20 years, and I feel that its my responsibility to make room for artistes, who are as good as we are but yet haven’t been recognised. Moreover, I prefer to perform in a city only once in few months so that it does not get repetitive.”
The chemistry between this musician and his instrument is impeccable and unveiling the secret behind his youthfulness and zeal that reflects on his face while performing, Hussain said, “Tabla is like my favorite toy. How can I not share my excitement when I sit and create music with such an incredible instrument? Any musical instrument has so much joy and positive energy that one cannot get tired of it. I always ask my students to treat the instrument like a friend, who will be their mate for years to come. It is only then that the unfolding and exploring starts.”
Commenting on being nominated for the Grammy awards, he said, “I would prefer to be known as Padmashree Ustad Zakir Hussain rather than a Grammy winner. If someone gets an international recognition, it is a lesson for the local authorities to know that they have missed out on something.”
Hussain will perform today at MES Abasaheb Garware College Ground, Karve Road,6.30 pm onwards.
