ZP opens 300 child development centres in villages
Indian Express: The Zilla Parishad has started 300 rural child development centres to ensure proper nutrition and care for children below six years of age. “The idea also involves mothers in this endeavour. This is an unique project wherein we will focus on children’s nutrition,” said CEO Sanjiv Kumar of the Zilla Parishad.
With Rs 15,000 dedicated for 10 children in these day care centres, the ZP is also looking at funding from gram panchayats and from the Centre under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). “Once the funds begin coming in, we will start providing nutrition to children,” said Kumar.
Nearly 2,000 teachers have been trained at Baramati and Khed for this initiative.
Kumar said such centres were essential in villages where women work in fields. Earlier, a survey carried out in villages had shown poor nutrition level in children below six years.
Most children in rural areas are neglected with no adequate education as they were left behind at home or with relatives when their parents went for work.
The ZP will rope in agencies that will provide good nutritional food to the children. Parents too can drop in at these centres and keep a check on these centres.
