Pune Mirror: This 15-year-old had made India, particularly Pune, proud. This Vikhe Patil School student has won two international medals in science olympiads in one year! Sarthak Chandra, a Class XI student, aims to study Astrophysics and become a scientist.
Sarthak won a silver medal at the 6th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) in Baku, Azerbaijan, from December 2 to 12, 2009. This medal followed his bronze feat at the International Earth Science Olympiad in Taiwan in September 2009.
At least 258 students from 48 teams from across the world participated in the event. The age condition for participants was 15 years or below.
Sarthak said, “The competition had three rounds including Theories and Practicals.
This year’s Olympiad was declared as the toughest IJSO in all six years with the longest practical that went on for five hours.” This is not Sarthak’s first international success. He has participated in many such competitions.
“I had won a silver medal for India at the Astronomy Olympiad in 2008. I was representing India last year too for the Astronomy Olympiad in Italy,” Sarthak said. The six-member IJSO-Baku team got one gold and five silver medals for India.
