Drive those birthday blues away…
Birthdays and funerals are quite similar that way. The ratio of people’s turn out at your party is directly proportional to your popularity meter. It kind of gives a lowdown of life, of how you have been as a person all these years, which can be evaluated on these days by people’s actions and sweet words.
When my birthday started coming closer, I started getting really stressed. First and foremost, I didn’t understand what is all the fuss about birthdays? And for a woman who crosses the 25 years of age demarcation, it is painful enough to digest that she is got a year older. And then being evaluated by people around her as per the social brouhaha is close to sacrilege. Friends suggested that I was just suffering from pre birthday blues and need to take a chill pill. So I decided that I won’t succumb to the pressure of my life performance any longer, courtesy family and relatives with their “Oh! My god, you’ve turned a year older and what have you decided to do with your life now”. But just go with the flow and enjoy my birthday, which I apparently had never done before.
My birthday countdown started with a close friend, two days prior. (He had to urgently leave the country). And that too with one of the sweetest gifts I could ever imagine. He had made a beautiful assorted collage of all my pictures with him as a reminder of all the times we had spent together in the past year along with personal notes and poems. And next day was followed by a huge surprise dinner party thrown by my friends to bring in my B’day, accompanied with loads of love, madness and non- stop laughter. And from the strike of midnight and even before, the calls, messages, gifts and Facebook updates have just not stopped. They are coming in from all over the world, bringing along with it the fun filled lunches, evening rendezvous and the fantastic dinners.
So after so many years, wisdom has actually dawned upon me. I kind of now understand the importance of birthdays. Not only does it mark the importance of your birth but is also a great medium of celebrating life and enjoying every moment of basking in the love and glory of friends and family. It can be a gentle reminder as well telling you that as the age increases, life gets shorter so it is important to make the most of it now. And taking all this in to account all I can do is thank God for all he has bestowed upon me in abundance, be it the professionally or even personally .
So for all those who sulk about their birthdays and getting older, remember “Growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional”. I doubt the latter is ever going to happen to me, so till then, let me revel with all that birthday attention, the surprises, the gifts and the fantastic moments showered upon me. Year after year, just bring it on!
