Scholarships under UoP’s tie-up with Canadian varsities to double
Times of India: The number of scholarships being offered under the student exchange programme between the University of Pune (UoP) and a consortium of 17 universities from Ontario in Canada are set to be doubled from the existing 25 to 50.
The UoP’s director of International Students’ Centre (ISC) Vasudha Garde told TOI, “50 students from India would go for higher studies at either of the 17 universities in Ontario and an equal number of students from Canada will reach the UoP for studies.”
She said, “The academic collaboration between the consortium and the UoP is further being strengthened with the former declaring interest in moving to the area of faculty exchange too.”
“An announcement to this effect was made by Sheila Embleton, president of the Shashtri Indo-Canadian Institute, during the formal inauguration of the Ontario Maharashtra Goa (OMG) students’ exchange office on the ISC premises on Monday,” Garde said. Embelton earlier headed the team of the Canadian consortium based at the York University, Ontario, that worked out the bilateral academic collaboration.
The OMG office will play facilitator to students from Maharashtra and Goa in identifying the universities at Ontario for pursuing their higher studies; securing tuition waiver for them and, to an extent, securing travel costs as well as job opportunities for sustenance during their study period, said Garde. “Simultaneously, it will also play facilitator to the Canadian students seeking studies at UoP.”
The ISC is the nodal agency through which all admissions of foreign students are processed for the varsity’s on-campus post-graduate departments as well as the affiliated colleges and recognised institutions across the UoP jurisdiction of Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar districts.
With students from over 90 countries studying at the UoP and its affiliated academic organisations, the ISC has been engaged in collaborative programmes with several foreign universities.
According to Garde, “Apart from faculty exchange, the consortium has also shown a favourable disposition towards staff exchange programmes.”
Embelton told members at the inaugural function that the consortium started focusing on its collaborative efforts with universities in four key countries, viz., China, India, South Africa and Russia. The office at the ISC campus is the consortium’s second overseas unit after having established a similar office in China.
