Police stations to set-up cyber squads to tackle cyber crimes

Times of India: The Pune police have directed 28 police stations in the city to set-up cyber squads to tackle the rising rate of cyber crimes in the city. The squads, which will be headed by an inspector (crime), will receive assistance of a sub-inspector and two policemen.

The instructions to set-up squad at police station levels was issued by city police commissioner Satya Pal Singh, in view of the amended Information Technology Act, 2009, which came into effect from October 27.

Deputy commissioner of police Rajendra Dahale, in-charge of the cyber cell of crime branch, Pune, on Saturday said that the IT Act, 2000 was civil in nature and 90 per cent of crimes were non-cognisable and 10 per cent of crimes, like internet banking, debit card and lottery (received on email and sms) frauds are cognisable and the victim in 90 per cent cases was entitled to damages or compensation.

Speaking to TOI, Dahale said that after the new amendments, all crimes have now become cognisable and hence a need was felt to form squads to take immediate action if any incident of cyber crime is reported.

Dahale said, “We have trained 370 officers and men at the cyber lab set up at the police headquarters in Shivajinagar. The cyber cell will give assistance to police stations in serious cases and will take over investigations in complicated cases in which huge amounts are involved and criminals are operating in different states.”

The new provisions are punishable from three years to life imprisonment and the fine is from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1 crore.

The cell received 229 complaints and registered 10 cases in 2009. Total 207 complaints were received and 8 cases registered in 2008 and 99 complaints were received and 13 cases were registered in 2007.
