‘Ek Cup Chya’, a film on Right To Information Act

Sakaal Times: Ek Cup Chya’ (A Cup of Tea), a critically-acclaimed Marathi movie based on a commoner’s fight against the indifferent bureaucracy with the help of Right To Information (RTI) Act, will be premièred in the city on Thursday.

The nearly two-hour long film, which is produced by city-based Schizophrenia Awareness Association (SAA) and KS Wani Memorial Trust, Dhule, narrates the story of a bus conductor who successfully takes up the issue of an inflated electric bill with the authorities using the power of RTI.

“By mean of ‘Ek Cup Chya,’ we have attempted a film in which the importance of Right To Information Act for a common man to overcome the injustice caused by government machinery is being focused,” producer of the movie and president of SAA Yeshwant Oak told Sakaal Times.

“There is need of public awareness on the use of RTI, as it can be used as a powerful weapon to fight against indifferent bureaucracy,” he said.

The light-hearted film, budgeted over Rs 60 lakh, has been widely appreciated at Mumbai Film Festival and International Film Festival of India, Goa, where it was screened recently.

“A cup of tea is referred as a symbol of hospitality in our society but unfortunately it has now become a symbol of hidden message of corruption in our bureaucracy. ‘Ek Cup Chya’ salutes those who refuse to offer ‘A Cup of Tea’ but choose to fight their battle for justice in a democratic, non-violent way,” one of the directors of the film, Sunil Sukthankar said.

Sukthankar and Sumitra Bhave, the other director of the film, have made nine movies so far in the past including Devrai (2004), a film produced by SAA that demystified schizophrenia.

‘Ek Cup Chya,’ which has some of its shooting done in Pune, has some city-based artistes in the lead roles.
The movie, which will be premièred at City Pride multiplex in Kothrud on 6.30 pm Thursday, will be released subsequently in the state.
