City-based centre campaigns for No Vehicle Day for climate change awareness

Indian Express: With UN climate change conference set to begin next week in Copenhagen, city-based Centre for Development Education (CDE) has been working on a module to involve youngsters in such campaigns. As part of this, the students of Fergusson College observed a No Vehicle Day on Thursday with an objective to educate students about global warming.

“The event included issuing circulars, displaying posters and notices informing others about climate change and so on. Also, students who travel on bikes and other vehicles opted for public transport on Thursday,” said Subbalakshmi Kumar, director, CDE.

“This is a first-of-its-kind initiative at Fergusson College. We have plans for awareness drives every month. Soon, we will be involving other colleges as well.”

CDE has designed modules and sessions that put forth the issues related to climate change in a participative manner. “We have divided the entire exercise into eight modules that are easy for children to comprehend. It is said that the developing countries are responsible for the increasing carbon emissions in the world, but we want the children to have their own opinions,” said Kumar.

Called voices, the opinions have been put up on social networking sites. “We are even joined by schools in Kenya and the UK in this activity. The opinions of these students will be compiled into a 24- page booklet, which will be published at the forthcoming Copenhagen conference.”
