Two city girls included in national basketball squad
Indian Express: City-based Shireen Limaye and Sneha Rajguru made it to the 12-member Indian squad that will take part in the Asian u – 16 Basketball Championship from Monday onwards at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi.
Limaye, who is also a national level cueist, embraced her dream of donning the Indian colours after her name was announced in the final squad by the Basketball Federation of India today.
The fourteen-year-old is a student of the Shikshak Prasarak Mandal School, Pune. Basketball has been a family affair for her – her mother having represented the country and brother having represented the state on a few occasions.
She started playing at the age of 6 with the PYC Hindu Gymkhana basketball club where her mother is the coach and is a part of the team even now.
Watching her daughter play for her country has been a dream of Suvarna Limaye and she is delighted as her dream will unfold in a matter of days.
What is more special is that she will be able to watch her daughter in action, as the tournament will be held locally.
“I am overjoyed to hear the news of my daughter being selected in the team. Being able to watch her play will be a bonus”, she said.
Sneha Rajguru, is a ninth standard student of Sardar Dastur High School of Pune.
This fourteen-year-old pivot has played all her basketball for Dastur club under the coaching of the vastly experienced Lalit Nahata.
Nahata is delighted to have witnessed the selection of his student and feels she will do very well in the tournament.
“She has a great height advantage and she uses it well. I am sure she will be an asset to the Indian team”, he said.
As a bonus for Maharashtra state, Amrita Bhuskute of Mumbai will be leading the squad.
The 5’9” power centre is in the tenth grade and studies in the SV Joshi High School, Dombivli. She has been training at the Agradneya Vyayam Shala in Dombivli.
India has been clubbed in Pool A. Other teams in the group include China, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Phillipines, Hong Kong. Pool B teams comprises of Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand and Kazakhstan.
