Pune railway station to get one more footbridge
Times of India: The railway authorities have proposed that a third foot overbridge (FOB) be built at Pune railway station in order to reduce congestion on the existing bridges.
The new bridge will be built next to the one which begins at the main entrance of the railway station. At present, according to senior railway authorities, passengers prefer to use this bridge since it also enables passengers to reach the other entry-exit point of the station which leads to the highway. This bridge is the oldest bridge at the railway station and is crowded at any time of the day. In fact, so crowded does it get that there have been instances during the peak evening hours of 4 pm to 7 pm when overcrowding has led to minor stampedes.
A second bridge, constructed seven years ago and located at the Mumbai end of platform number one, is barely used by passengers despite several attempts by the authorities to make people aware of the new facility. The location of the final halt of the suburban local trains was changed so the passengers could use the new bridge. Also during the initial years, the older bridge was closed for some hours every day for repair and maintenance work.
Despite this, people continue to use the first bridge because not only is it conveniently placed, but both ends lead to entry and exit points at the station. The second bridge only has one entry exit point on the platform of the station.
The proposal for a new FOB has been sent to Mumbai for approval.
Over the years, there has been a significant rise in the number of passengers arriving and leaving Pune railway station and, although expansion of the station premises is not possible due to non-availability of land, the authorities point out that efforts are being made to improve the circulating area for the passengers.
