University of Pune will start MBA course in hospital and healthcare

Indian Express: In the wake of the growing demand for hospital administrators, the University of Pune (UoP) will start MBA course in hospital and healthcare from the 2011-12 session.

As the market for health care is expected grow to around $ 40 billion by 2012, the need for manpower is also expected to grow by leaps and bounds.

The University of Pune accepted the proposal to start MBA in hospital and healthcare in-principle in a meeting held on Monday.

The directors of 140 management institutes recognised or affiliated to the varsity attended the meeting. Sancheti Hospital had mooted the proposal to start a fulltime course.

C M Chitale, dean of management studies said, “As there is a huge demand in this sector, it was decided to start a fulltime course in this stream. However, it will take some time to frame the norms for the course,” he said.

Parag Sancheti, chairman, Sancheti Hospital, said the need for hospital administrators is very high and a formal course will help create manpower.

Sancheti Hospitals is already running a one-year diploma course in healthcare management for the past 9 years with an intake capacity of 40 students.

“Presently, the most of the hospital administrators are not formally educated in the sector. As the healthcare scenario is undergoing change and hospitals are also going the corporate way, administration of hospitals has become a specialised job,” he said.

“Trained manpower is necessary as the area of health tourism is also booming and foreigners are coming to India for surgeries or other treatments. They want for a corporate look and search for better facilities,” said Sancheti.

According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, India needs to add 80,000 hospital beds each year for the next five years to meet the demands of its growing population, which is an indication of increasing demand for skilled managers to run these hospitals.

But the varsity is not going to hurry in permitting course to the institutes.

“We don’t want mushrooming of institutes offering this course once they are started. For that we are taking every care while setting up the norms,” said Chitale.

“There will be strict norms for infrastructure. Only having a hospital or having a building will not be sufficient. The institutes or hospitals that are interested in starting this course will have to stick to the norms of AICTE too,” Chitale said as a a warning.
