City students to participate United Nations’ Climate Change Conference

Indian Express: Sixteen-year old Roopak Karulkar and 14-year-old Trupti Joshi from Pune are all set to participate in the much-talked-about United Nations’ Climate Change Conference ‘COP15’ that will take place at Copenhagen, Denmark from December 7 -18. While Roopak is busy making a short film on the subject, Trupti is getting ready to talk on a children’s perspective of climate change at the conference. The duo was selected to attend the conference after they won the Games Olympiad of Disaster And Climate Management (GODAC) held in the city in September by Neeti Solutions and Global Challenge Award (GCA).

Trupti, a class IX student of Mar Ivanios Convent High School, Pimple Gurav is preparing a presentation on ozone depletion and climate change. “I am preparing a power point presentation that will cover the repercussions on ozone depletion on earth,”she said, adding that the presentation in its last stages.

On the other hand, Roopak, a class X student of Abhinav English Medium School is making a seven-minute short film on temperature rise. “While I will decide the shots and locations and direct the film, it will mostly be shot by budding director Akshay Bapat,”Roopak said. He plans to complete the film by December first week.

The duo will be accompanied by Parag Mankeekar, founder-director of Neeti Solutions Limited and Dr Manasi Abhyankar, coordinator (school safety), Neeti Solutions for COP15. This team of four is part of the 350 delegates invited by www.350.org -a mission that stresses on 350 parts per million (ppm)- the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere.

The overall goal for the COP15 was to establish an ambitious global climate agreement for the period from 2012 when the first commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol expires. Government officials and politicians from at least 192 countries are expected at the conference.
