Pune fast emerging as crime capital of state

Sakaal Times: The total value of property stolen during the last year in the areas under the jurisdiction of the Pune police commissionerate is estimated at a whopping Rs 500 crores – the highest among all nine police commissionerates in the state.

Worse still, the police were able to recover only about two per cent of the stolen property – which is by far less than the average 8.69 per cent recovery rate for the rest of the state.

This was revealed in the recently released annual report of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), titled ‘Crime in Maharashtra-2008’.

The total amount of property stolen in the state during 2008 stands at a staggering Rs 1,546 crores.

Pune has the dubious distinction of the highest share – Rs 500 crores which equals 32.35 per cent. Mumbai comes next with Rs 327.6 crores and Jalgaon at third place with Rs 218.9 crores.

During 2008, property stolen in the state was 51.3 per cent more than in the previous year, while the recovery percentage dropped to 8.69 per cent as compared to 14.30 per cent in 2007.

Out of the total 3,031 robberies committed in the state last year, Pune reported the highest number of cases (379) with property loss of around Rs 1.45 crore.

Out of the 161 cases of robberies committed at commercial establishments in the state, Pune recorded 28 cases and Mumbai 31 cases. These robberies accounted for property worth Rs. 21.5 lakh.

Pune recorded the second highest number of incidents of burglaries at residential premises (946) after Mumbai (1,571).

Pune also saw 348 cases of burglaries at commercial establishments, which was the third largest in the state, with Mumbai (835) and Thane (357) recording higher incidences.

Property stolen from Mumbai and Pune was to the tune of Rs 9.79 crore and Rs 2.59 crore respectively.

As many as 3,262 vehicles were stolen from the jurisdiction of the Pune police commissionerate, out of which police were able to recover only 921 vehicles.
