Newly-wed couple’s dream to fly in helicopter dashed

Times of India: A city businessman’s efforts in arranging a private helicopter for the wedding of his son has hit a snag, with the police turning down his plea for permission.

Businessman Nandu Rajput, who stays in Warje, had filed an application with the Pune police seeking permission to use a helicopter to take his daughter-in-law from her home and wedding place at Handewadi in Hadapsar to Khanapur in Raigad district where his son Arjun lives on Friday, a day after their wedding.

Rajput succeeded in obtaining clearance from the Airports Authority of India before seeking police clearance as required by law. He had barricaded 15 gunthas (about 15,000 square feet) of land at Handewadi and appointed 25 private security guards to ensure safe landing of the helicopter. He had also requested the police to provide security.

The police conducted primary checks of the arrangements Rajput had made to ensure safe landing of the helicopter. They also checked out about the number of relatives who would assemble at the wedding venue.

The police finally showed the red flag, citing security reasons. Joint commissioner of police (law and order) Rajendra Sonawane said the landing spot created by Rajput was very close to the residential area. He also said such a move would “set a precedent and terrorists might use helicopters for striking targets in the city”.

The couple got married on Thursday without any helipad around the venue.
