Pune police to provide better and quick services to citizens

Times of India: With the offices of the special branch and the control room receiving a new upgrade, the Pune police will now be in a position to provide better and quick services to citizens as well as foreign nationals visiting the city.

An ultra-modern control room, computerised passport verification office and the foreigners registration office, all of which fall under the special branch, have been set up on the premises of the police commissioner’s office. The new set-up will be inaugurated by Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on November 22.

Speaking to TOI, deputy commissioner of police, special branch, Ravindra Sengaonkar, said, “With the latest computerised technology, the CP’s office will be in a position to give effective and quick service to citizens at large.”

According to Sengaonkar, nearly 27,000 foreign nationals are staying in the city at present. Out of them, 18,500 are staying on student visas, while around 5,000 are either on employment or business visa. “Hitherto, the foreigners had to face time-consuming process for registrations and to seek visa extension and return visa. It used to take almost 7 to 10 days for registration, 2 to 3 months for visa extension and almost a week’s time for getting a return visa. Work at the foreigners registration office has now become “paperless”, Sengaonkar said. “The whole system has been revamped and the work of registration and visa extension will be done in just 30 minutes. Even a return visa can be issued on the same day,” he added.

Sengaonkar said the passport registration office, too, has been modernised, keeping in mind the increase in registration of new passports. Time taken for police verification has drastically reduced to just seven days as against the three to four months taken earlier.

“The control room has been loaded with state-of-the art technology. Calls made to the control room can be traced to the point from where they originated. Moreover, with the help of global positioning system, the police can access the place within minutes,” he said.
