Tulshibaug
Tulshibaug has been a shopping destination for Punekars over several decades. Comprising of over 200 shops, Tulshibaug may be a congested place but still a popular destination for most shopaholics. Be it household goods, footwear, woolens, clothes or other daily toiletries, you are sure to find it at Tulshibaug. The business centre is split in lanes that take you to various small and big stall holders.
Tulshibaug gets its name from the Tulshibaug Wada located in this area which is a famous temple of Lord Ram, Ganpati and Shankar. The temple and the widespread area was once a property of Tulshibaugwale family who used to take active part in the Ram Navami celebrations. The temple was constructed by Naro Appaji Tulshibaugwale in 1761, who was then a subedar in the darbar of Shahu Maharaj. In those days, women had to travel a fair distance to shop and thus to make it easier for them a few shops were set up in the vicinity of the wada. The number of shops was quite low then but today the scenario has changed and the place is now home to several hundred stalls.
Despite the big malls and shopping complexes which have come up in Pune over the last few years, Tulshibaug remains a popular destination among masses because of the cheap cost of products. The price of the stuff sold here solely depends on how good you are at bargaining. The vendors are ready to sell the items at lower rates than their competitors to attract more buyers. There are several wholesale shops as well in Tulshibaug that sell their products at even cheaper rates.
If you are fashion conscious, you may not like to shop here as clothes from Tulshibaug become common apparel instantly given their low price tags. Yet, Tulshibaug is mainly horded by women buyers because it provides everything they need at one place. If not for the clothes, women throng the small lanes for make-up kits, daily care products, kitchen utensils, linens, footwear, handbags, bindis, bentex and imitation jewelry. The place is also great for shopping house hold appliances like iron stands, puja saman, crockery, gift articles and hosiery products.
Other than shopping, Tulshibaug is renowned for the vada pav centre at the entrance of the shopping area, Kawre ice cream parlour, Hotel Agatya and Shree Krishna Bhuvan for its spicy and yummy misal. There are many other small eateries set up all across the business centre which are always crowded with youngsters and elders alike.
Visiting Tulshibaug days before festivals is fun as the place looks colourful and is drenched in the festive mood. However when entering Tulshibaug there is one thing you need to keep in mind and that is to take care of your valuables and small kids if any.
