Cyclone Phyan makes fish price higher
Pune Mirror: If you’ve been to the fish market recently and returned empty handed, then you know that the prices of seafood have sky rocketed.
Cyclone Phyan which hit the western coast of Maharashtra and Gujarat has left more than 150 trees uprooted in the city. And it’s made that pomfret fry pricier.
The reason behind this is that fishing in the coastal region has been closed completely because of Phyan as several fishing boats have been reported missing in the Arabian sea. The supply of fish and fish products to the city has decreased by more than half as compared to last week.
As it is prices of vegetables and other farm products, that were already high, have gone up due to unseasonal rains that caused quite a bit of destruction especially in the Konkan region of Maharashtra.
According to Balasaheb Pardeshi, a fish merchant in the city market, “Generally, the city consumes five to six tonnes of fish daily. But due to this cyclone, the supply of fish has decreased by three tonnes and the city gets only about 2 tonnes of fish a day now.”
“Supply from the Ratnagiri region has stopped completely. There is only a partial supply of fish from Mumbai and Gujarat.”
“This is the reason behind the sudden rise in the prices of fish and fish products in the market,” said Pardeshi.
