Pune boy shines at international tech competition
Pune Mirror: Prateek Banga, a final year student of Smt Kashibai Navle College of Engineering (SKNCOE) participated in the ‘Present Around the World’ (PATW) competition organised by Institution of Engineering and Technology, a London-based global organisation having branches in 127 countries. The competition requires you to present any technology innovation.
Prateek Banga, who has just passed out from SKNCOE, participated first at the regional level PATW competition in which he won the first prize in the western and central India region.
There were about 100 participants from all western India. He went on to the national level and as well, thus qualifying for the international level competition.
The Asia Pacific region PATW was organised in Beijing, China on October 23. Parteek bagged a runner-up prize in the same. There were participants from eight countries.
About Prateek’s project
Prateek’s presentation was based on his group’s final year BE project titled, ‘Automotive Number Plate Recognition System for Indian Condi-tions’, said Professor Mrs P Mukherji of SKNCOE, who was a project guide.
Along with Prateek, three other students, Kushal Shah, Ashish Khatri and Prathamesh Kulkarni were also involved in the project. The students developed and incorporated image processing algorithms on their own to develop the system.
Prateek elaborated on his project saying, “If a digital image is been clicked by the cameras deployed on roads, our system can recognise the number plate automatically and save the number in a digital data format for further reference.”
About the challenge in presenting his innovation abroad, he said, “Such systems exist abroad. In India, number plate standards, though they exist, are not followed very widely.
As a result, wide variations are found in the licence plates in terms of font type, character size and location. We had to write algorithms considering all these variations.”
