Gas leak from overturned tanker affects traffic on old highway
Sakaal Times: Traffic was disrupted on the old Pune-Mumbai highway as a tanker carrying highly inflammable liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) belonging to Bharat Petroleum (BP) overturned near Kamshet resulting in a gas leak on Tuesday morning.
According to the highway police, the tanker (MH 06 K 4499), which was heading towards Shikrapur from Mumbai, turned turtle at Pathergaon Khind near the old Pune-Mumbai highway at 10.30 am. A gas leak followed the mishap, after which the highway police and the company officials rushed to the spot. The traffic flow in both directions was stopped as a precautionary measure.
Due to the leakage, the electricity in the neighbouring village was disconnected and the villagers were taken to a safe place to avoid any untoward incident. Fear gripped the persons residing in the vicinity. The hotels were shut down and citizens advised not to light fires. The electricity of the overhead wires was disconnected, which affected the local train services between Pune and Lonavla. Rail commuters had to face the brunt due to cancellation of some of the local trains.
Police suspect that the driver of the vehicle, Isman Sayyed (30), might have lost control over the vehicle, which resulted in the mishap. Sayyed and his associate present in the vehicle were injured in the mishap and are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Traffic was diverted to the expressway due to which a snarl was reported till afternoon. Vehicles heading towards Mumbai from Pune were diverted from Kivle, Somatne and Talegaon, whereas vehicles coming to Pune from Mumbai were diverted from Khandala. Due to this, slow moving traffic was reported the entire day.
Officials from HP sealed the leakage at 2 pm after which the gas was loaded into another tanker. The overturned tanker was cleared from the road with the help of a crane.
