Class monitor
Pune Mirror: An innovative technology for classroom teaching and corporate training is being launched by city-based firm Great Software Laboratory (GS Lab).
GS Lab is ready to provide the technology for interactive online classrooms in which the teacher can monitor the students fully, just like in an actual class.
If a student opens Facebook or Orkut or any other webpage while the class is on by minimising the class window, the teacher immediately gets an alert. An IT company and an engineering college have already experimented with this service.
The service, called KPoint, is an internet-based solution in which subscribers will not need to add any new software or change system settings.
Students can ask questions by raising their hand — through a ‘raise-your hand’ option. Although the class is virtual, teachers still have full control over their students.
Dr Sudhir Shukla, managing director of GS Lab, said, “The KPoint solution is an online classroom hosted on our servers. It automatically produces multimedia archives which can be referred to later as well.”
Dr Sunil Gaitonde, CEO, GS Lab said, “Currently, KPoint is deployed successfully in Persistence System for training purposes.
The premier engineering college of the city — Pune Institute of computer Technology (PICT) — is holding trials of the system and they will start conducting virtual classroom sessions within the next two months.”
And this solution is not just for students of technology. Classical singer Vikas Kashalkar has been using KPoint to train his students who live abroad.
While elaborating on the uniqueness of their system, Atul Narkhedkar, vice president of GS Lab, said, “Unlike other existing online systems, KPoint allows interaction in real time with all the control at the teacher’s end.
There are other solutions available, but they are not meant exclusively for education purposes.
But as we are focussing on education, we can give all the features one would find in a physical classroom.” The formal launch of KPoint is scheduled for today.
