Jeweller held for smuggling
Sakaal Times: The local crime branch claimed to have busted a smuggling racket with the arrest of a city-based jeweller and his accomplice and seizure of 2.5 kg gold, 330 gm silver and Rs 28 lakh cash, totally worth Rs 77 lakh, on Thursday night.
Police intercepted a car near Navle Lawns on Pune-Bengaluru highway. On holding a search of the car, they found the contraband.
Police then arrested Mahesh Mali (38), owner of Mahesh Jewellers located at Govind Halwai Chowk in Raviwar Peth and his driver Sadashiv Jangam (28).
“The duo were detained and questioned pertaining to the seizure. They failed to provide any receipts in this regard,” Superintendent of Police Pune (Rural) Pratap Dighavkar said.
The gold biscuits carry imprints of Switzerland. The case has now been handed over to the customs department.
The currency notes will be handed over to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for inspection of serial numbers.
Mali originally hails from Hupari in Kolhapur district from where, police suspect, the journey began.
The police suspect that the duo might be acting as middle men for transporting the contraband.
Primary investigations revealed that Mali was travelling to various places in the country and had made phone calls to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
SWISS IMPRINT
The gold biscuits seized by the police, carry imprints of Switzerland. The case has now been handed over to the customs department.
