Punekars have a flair for food and are always eager to try something new even if the eatery is located on the other end of the city. Then we don’t care if it is a street side hawker or a plush restaurant, as long as it serves delicacies that get our taste buds tingling.
Misal is one such traditional food item that continues to convert more food enthusiasts every single day. However, there are very few restaurants or eateries left in the city which offer the real taste of the famous Puneri misal and Shri Krishna Bhuvan in Tulshibaug is one of them.
Established in 1941, Shri Krishna Bhuvan continues to be run by the Joshi family. Located in one of the small lanes of Tulshibaug that leads to the Mandai road, Shri Krishna Bhuvan has been the haven for most misal lovers of the city.
The food joint does not particularly boast of the ideal ambience or interiors. It houses normal chairs and tables as its seating arrangement and can accumulate approximately 20 to 25 people at a given time.
However, it continues to win hearts because of its lip-smacking misal. If food connoisseurs are to be believed, its misal still tastes just as good as it used to when it first opened its doors to food lovers over 50 years ago. You get to choose from the spicy and less spicy variety which is served with pav. Misal is nothing but a mixture of matki served with curry, finely chopped onions, coriander leaves, bundi, farsan and other masalas all mixed together in the right proportion.
You can enjoy the misal along with some luscious curd or buttermilk with masala. Other than misal, Shri Krishna Bhuvan also serves typical puneri style shira, poha and upma to the early birds and hostalities who crowd this place every morning to enjoy their favourite breakfast item. This also pretty much sums up the menu of the eatery because the joint never felt the need to turn to other food dishes to expand its ever growing customer base.
So the next time you are craving for some good old Puneri misal and are yet to try Shri Krishna Bhuvan, head straight to Tulsi Baug for the real deal. Even though a trip to the crowded central part of the city may not really seem too good an idea, make the trip as we promise it’ll be worth it.
