City likely to face 20% water cut
The Times of India: Citizens are likely to face a 20 per cent water cut soon as the irrigation department is set to curtail supply to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) by over 100 MLD (million litres per day).
There is also an apprehension that the city may get curtailed water supply or no supply for two days in a month as there will be no supply of untreated water from dams to the treatment plants twice a month. The PMC, which has been receiving 1,070 MLD of water, will get only 950 MLD now, an official of the irrigation department said on Thursday.
The formula was discussed during a meeting held between PMC water department and irrigation officials recently. Although the PMC has not made any official announcement, it is expected to declare a detailed water supply schedule in a day or two.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) circulated the minutes of the meeting amongst reporters.
The irrigation department had initially suggested that it would supply 900 MLD of water per day to the PMC as against the current 1,070 MLD. However, the civic body asked for at least 950 MLD while agreeing that it will not lift water for two days in a month.
Avinash Surve, superintending engineer of Pune irrigation division, said the four dams that supply water to Pune city are short of an average 3.57 TMC of water in comparison to November last year.
