No respite in prices next month as well
Sakaal Times: With steady rise in prices of sugar, pulses and vegetables; the essential food items have become out of reach of common man. The prices will remain non-affordable during upcoming month, say city traders.
Particularly, prices of tur dal have soared during last three months. On Monday, tur dal was priced at Rs 7700-8800 per quintal (Rs 77-88 per kg) while the mung dal was priced at Rs 8100-8500 per quintal (Rs 81-85 per kg), said city-based trader in pulses Nitin Nahar.
As on Monday, the price of udid dal was Rs 7000-7300 per quintal (Rs 70-73 per kg), masur dal Rs 5450-5550 per quintal (Rs 54-50-55.50 per kg), harbhara dal Rs 3050-3250 per quintal (Rs 30.50-32.50 per kg) and matki dal Rs 7800-8100 per quintal (Rs 78-81 per kg).
“Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are the main pulse-growing regions while Rajasthan provides mung and matki dal. But the heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and less rains in Rajasthan, have affected the crops resulting in lesser yield. However, the report of new crop production will be released next month. Till then there would be no drop in prices of pulses,” he said.
Meanwhile, the price of sugar too has doubled within a year. Last year sugar price was Rs 18 per kg that has hiked to Rs 34-35 now. With coriander at Rs 5-10 per bunch, methi Rs 10 per bunch, brinjal Rs 24-26 per kg, cauliflower Rs 30-34 per kg, cabbage Rs 12-14 per kg and drumstick Rs 42-46 per kg, vegetables have also marked their presence in soaring prices list, said vegetable trader from wholesale market Vilas Bhujbal, adding that due to shortage of vegetables, the hiked prices would stable for few days.
