ATM with Rs 10.5 lakh stolen from Kasarwadi
The Times of India: An automated teller machine (ATM) weighing about 300 kg and containing Rs 10.5 lakh was stolen from the Kasarwadi branch of the Union Bank of India (UBI) in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The security guard was absent at the time of the incident, the first of its kind in Pune, and he has been detained.
Interestingly, renovation work was under way on the first floor of the bank when burglars carted away the ATM from a room on the ground floor.
According to the police, the bank had asked their part-time sweeper, Damu Suryavanshi, to supervise the renovation work. Carpenters were working, but nobody realised what was happening downstairs.
The incident came to light around 7.30 am, when Suryavanshi came down and saw the ATM missing. He immediately informed the branch manager, Chandrashekhar Kulkarni, who later called the police.
Kulkarni told TOI that the ATM had Rs 10.50 lakh. “We had kept Rs 12 lakh in the machine on Saturday. The guard was absent on Monday and we do not have a CCTV camera inside the ATM room,” he said.
The security guard detained by the police was identified as Niranjan Adagale (34) of Yerawada. He was appointed by the bank through ‘Group 4′, a private security agency.
The police questioned all the carpenters who were working in the bank on Monday night. They have also launched a massive hunt for the suspects and four teams have fanned out to various areas.
Inspector Ravindra Chaudhar of Bhosari police station said, “The incident might have taken place after 2.30 am because the last transaction was made at 2.23 am. We have identified the person who withdrew money from the ATM just before it was stolen.”
