City lines up for Pune Merchants Chamber’s laddoo, chiwda spread

Indian Express: The Pune Merchants Chamber may end up selling more laddoos and chiwda this year. Already into its fourth day of sales, the chamber expects to sell close to 1.75-lakh kg of laddoos and around 1.65 lakh kg of chiwda by December 19, the last day of the sale.

One of the reasons considered for the increased sales this year is the high price of basic ingredients of sugar, ghee, and dal.

Chamber members say that with high prices of virtually every ingredient, people are likely to find it more feasible to make their purchases from the chamber.

“Last year, the chief ingredient sugar was at Rs 16 per kg, this year it is at Rs 35. We are holding the prices of both ladoos and chiwda at Rs 60 per kg, so that as many people can make purchases,” said Praveen Chorbele, secretary of the Pune Merchants Chamber.

On Wednesday alone, the chamber sold close to 25,000 kg of ladoos.

“Already we have sold 65,000 kg ladoos and we will easily cross 1.75 lakh kg this year. In a day or so, we expect the demand to outrun the supply. It happens every year,” said Bapu Maharaj, who is incharge of this project for the PMC.

This is the 22nd year of the project. “We started with 500 kg of ladoos. It is the word-of-mouth popularity that has taken us till here today,” said Maharaj.

Although the chamber is not involved in exports, Maharaj said that several customers had purchased several kilos of ladoos to send abroad, especially to Dubai, US and UK.

The ladoos are available at Grahak Peth, Pune Merchants Chamber, Gultekdi, Oswal Bandhu joint at Seven Loves junction, Pushpam Gas Agency at Bibewadi, Jagdish Promotion store at Hadapsar and at Kothrud.
