Rental power company Aggreko opens its first depot in India

Indian Express: Aggreko, a global player in the provision of rental power and temperature control on Tuesday announced the opening of if its first depot in India at Wagholi in Pune with an initial investment of Rs 30 crore. The company also plans to invest Rs 400 crore in the country over next two years and open power depots in Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi.

Aggreko entered the Indian market earlier this year through the takeover of Cummins India Ltd’s power rental business in a deal worth USD 4-5 million. Addressing a press conference Kash Pandya, managing director, Aggreko International said that the company aims to have a pan India presence within two years and emerge as a key player in the country in the rental power business. “Now, most of the players operating in the country are local players and we want to tap the huge potential of the Indian market. We will also be approaching various state governments and participating in their selection process. Already we are in talks with Tamil Nadu and Delhi governments,” he said.

The planned depot can provide temporary power for industries such as manufacturing, oil and gas, shipping, process industries, mining and construction, as well as for major sporting events. Aggreko can also provide multi-megawatt power projects to support the rapid growth of India and to assist in overcoming capacity constraints.

“We will also participate in the tender process for the Common Wealth Youth Games scheduled in Delhi provided the experience we had in supplying rental power for the Beijing Olympics,” Pandya added. James Shepherd, managing director, South and West Asia, said “We will have a multi-hub system with depots located in strategic cities across India. Our first depot in Pune will service our customers in Western India. Our Chennai depot will follow soon to take care of the Southern market. Going forward we plan to open service operations in Delhi and Kolkata by the end of 2010 to cater to our customers in the North and East of India.”
