SHGs’ industrial unit exports 80,000 polythene bags to US
Times of India: The Swamini Akhil Mahila Bachatgat Mahasangh (SAMBM) at Talawade, the first industrial unit of women self-help groups (SHGs) in Pimpri-Chinchwad, has flagged off its first consignment of 80,000 polythene bags to New York. Two trucks carrying the bags left for Mumbai on Friday. It will be sent to New York by ship.
During the flagging-off function, Pune divisional commissioner Dilip Band said: “Nothing is impossible if one makes a resolve. Swamini is a live example of it. This project was started to provide employment to women. Confidence has developed among them after the successful start of this project.”
“Now, you should try to get a market for your goods,” Band told the women. “Keep the rates of your products lower than the market rates. And try to set up basic amenities so that the work can be conducted without any interruption.”
Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner Ashish Sharma said that the civic body will continue to encourage women SHGs to set-up similar projects. He advised the women to produce the parts needed for their project to reduce production cost and increase profit.
Eleven women SHGs had come together to set up the polythene bag unit on May 28. The SHGs raised Rs 20 lakh of the total cost of the project, while the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation provided a subsidy of Rs 30 lakh and Rs 50 lakh came from bank loans.
Fifty women work in the project in two shifts. The bags produced at the unit could be are used to store animal food, fertilisers, sugar and other goods. The raw material from Pune based Sumedh Polymers is used at the project. The finished product produced at the project is later supplied back to Sumedh Polymers.
Corporator Sulabha Ubale and SAMBM president Swati Muzumdar were among those present at the ceremony.
