Street Food Review: Nandu’s
For this week’s street food review I had made up my mind to taste some North Indian delicacies. Why you ask? Well I had been craving for paranthas for quite some time now and the first name that popped into my head was Nandu’s.
Nandu’s is this tiny little place located on Boat Club Road which runs parallel to the famous DP Road in Pune. It has been around for quite some time and it is fair to say that it has been doing well ever since its inception. The place is the favourite hangout of all my friends who stop by so often that they now know the menu by heart. Nandu’s offers a variety of North Indian delicacies at affordable prices. They are best known for their paranthas prepared in fifteen different varieties and served with curd and chutney.
On your first visit, it does take a long time to go through its extensive menu and finally decide on what you want to order. I took a safe bet and ordered the Aloo Parantha, perhaps the most famous North Indian dish outside North India, and the eatery sure lived up to its reputation because the hot parantha tasted absolutely delicious with the curd. The thick parantha was made out of freshly prepared dough, stuffed with spicy potatoes and topped with a spoonful of butter.
As I munched on it, I opened the menu to decide on what to order next. The menu offered everything from gobi and paneer paranthas to spinach, green peas and cheese paranthas. To add to my confusion, I noticed the place also served mixed stuffed paranthas with corn, peas and other filling choices. The size of the paranthas is also big enough to make a decent meal yet you always tend to give in to your taste buds and order another one to stuff yourself some more. The icing on the cake is the price as these paranthas fall in the reasonably low Rs.25-40 bracket. Besides paranthas Nandu’s is also known for its pav bhaji and lassi. The Patiala lassi in particular is a meal in itself.
As far as the set up is concerned, Nandu’s is a very small eatery with just a few chairs and tables laid out to serve the ever increasing crowd of students and corporate alike. Yet, it scores pretty well on the cleanliness front because it is indeed quite clean for a street food venue.
The place stays open for lunch and dinner all through the week. If you are feeling too lazy to get out of your house, you can also get your favourite paranthas home delivered provided you stay in close vicinity to the hotel.
So if it is paranthas that you are craving for, Nandu’s is waiting to satiate your taste buds.
