Jansamvedna starts citizens’ awareness campaign against milk adulteration
Times of India: In view of the milk adulteration cases surfacing in the state, city-based organisation Jansamvedna has started a citizens’ awareness campaign against adulteration of essential commodities.
A number of milk adulteration cases were detected by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the last two weeks in Pune, Satara, Solapur and Ahmednagar, where an artificial milk chemical was being added to milk.
Condemning the cases, Manoj Pathak of Jansamvedna said it was important for citizens to know that there were several people involved in adulteration of essential commodities.
“The campaign will be carried out in three steps. In the first step, hoardings and banners will he put up to bring to people’s notice what exactly was happening. We will display the names of the culprits involved in the rackets as they are harming the health of lakhs of people,” Pathak said. The drives will also be carried out in rural areas, he added.
“At a later stage, we will seek help from experts and scientists and propose to the FDA and government agencies methods through which such cases can be detected. Gradually, we will move on to other essential commodities,” Pathak said.
Pathak alleged that the adulteration rackets often function with the support of local politicians and officials. “We cannot reveal the names as of now, but we will also look into the matter and file a public interest litigation once we have evidence to back our claim. The main aim of the drive is to ensure that adulteration of all commodities is stopped,” Pathak said.
