Infosys orders travel restriction to Pune office
Sakaal Times: Software major Infosys’ head office at Bengaluru, issuing notification to its employees on Monday announcing travel restrictions to its Pune office, has evoked a mixed response from IT firms based in the city and outside.
“It’s a known fact that there is an epidemic. It will spread across the country. Obviously, one has to be careful. But I don’t think just by not travelling to affected places, the problem could be avoided,” Vice Chairman and MD, Zensar Technologies, Ganesh Natarajan said.
Associate Vice President (Strategic Marketing) Tata Technologies, Atul Patil said that there is no travel restriction notification issued by the Tata Group. “However, we have received an email asking us to take certain precautionary steps like drink lot of water, wash hands with soap, increase intake of lime among other general precautionary steps. I think most of the work should be done out of home till the situation improves,” Patil said.
Almost every senior executive today either has a company laptop or a desktop at home. Video conferencing should be another mode of interactive communication that can be encouraged. This would reduce the travel needs and keep the work going, he said.
General Manager, Small and Medium Enterprises, Dell India based in Bengaluru, Ravi Bharadwaj said that there was no travel curtail notification issued by his company. However, the company was taking all necessary preventive measure, without going for any drastic step immediately.
“There is no doubt in my mind that this step taken by Infosys is a right one. It would definitely help in controlling the situation. In Mexico, where swine flu first broke out, the entire country was shut down temporarily for a week. A similar step should have been taken by the government much earlier. We have to give importance to life over business. We can sustain short-term losses,” Chairman Information Technology Sub-Committee, MCCIA, Deepak Shikarpur said.
