No takers for Pune University’s computer courses in Dubai

Pune Mirror: The University of Pune (UoP) is all set to begin full fledged regular courses at its new off-shore campus in Dubai.

This, after succesfully running its first flagship course of executive MBAs.

Interestingly, according to initial checks conducted in Dubai, UoP officials found that there is not much demand for computer courses and IT engineering in the Middle East. They want to master management instead.

A team of UoP officials led by acting vice chancellor, Dr Arun Adsul,  recently visited the UAE campus at Ras-Al-Khaimah (RAK).

Based on a survey of the courses that are in demand, the UoP has decided to start a two-year full-time MBA programme by September 2009 and also an undergraduate management programme: Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA).

Dr Adsul told Pune Mirror, “We have plans to start all the regular professional courses conducted in the UoP at our RAK campus.

However, to check the response, we are starting with management courses, as there is a high demand for them.

In the engineering faculty, students of the Middle East aren’t demanding courses in the field of computers. So initially, we are beginning with mechanical engineering.

Electronics and telecommunication (EnTC) is the other branch we find is needed here. We are starting these two branches along with a course in architecture.” Adsul also said that chemical engineering is also in great demand in the Middle East.

“But we cannot start off all these courses simultaneously, as we have to check the response for it first. We also have limited manpower and infrastructure facilities”, he said.

The UoP has already started an executive MBA programme two months ago in RAK. 19 students enrolled for it.

“We got pretty good response even after a very short notice about admission and very brief advertising”, Adsul said. UoP is starting engineering courses on September 27, 2009.

Along with that, the commerce faculty will also be inaugurated which will conduct undergraduate management course (BBA). Each course will admit a maximum of 60 students.

All these courses will be conducted in the RAK campus which is 64 km of Dubai. University of Pune is the first such state university to establish itself outside India.

Edulink Consultants, a Dubai-based education constancy firm is facilitating the setup of UoP in RAK.

UoP is operating on the RAK new campus and the infrastructure development is going on. “Now, we have acquired a medical college building to start off classes,” Adsul said.

The selected faculty of the UoP will be sent to RAK. They will work there for a month or two, according to the need of the syllabi.”

All administration work regarding admissions and exams will be co-ordinated of Pune. Dr K C Mohite of UoP has been appointed as the director of RAK campus.
