Scar-free surgery method launched at Aditya Birla Hospital

Sakaal Times: Chinchwad-based multi-specialty healthcare services, Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital has employed the trans-umbilical single-incision, almost scar-free laparoscopic surgery to treat its patients with inguinal and umbilical hernia, removal of appendix and gall bladder, which makes up the vast majority of single port procedures.

The hospice becomes the first hospital in Pune and Maharashtra after Mumbai, to offer this modern technique of the trans-umbilical single incision laparoscopic surgery in malnutrition, routinely, also the next major advance in laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic surgeon Dr Sumit Talwar of the Aditya Birla Institute of Minimal Invasive Surgery, performed the laparoscopic appendectomy (removal of the appendix) with a single 1.5 cm cut in the naval of a 20-year-old patient for appendix. He guided the instruments and the cacamera used in laparoscopic surgery through the single ‘port,’ or opening, to provide access to the abdomen, to perform the surgery.

This technique left no visible skin scar, since the belly-button hides the incision site. The patient was discharged the next day. “Trans-umbilical single-incision, scar-free surgery is the next major advance in laparoscopic surgery,” said Dr Talwar. “During traditional laparoscopy, 3-6 small abdominal incisions are made to insert a camera and instruments to perform surgical procedures,” he added.

“Single Incision surgery is in stark contrast to the traditional laparoscopic cholecystectomy that requires four or more incisions to accommodate various surgical instruments. Cosmetically, our novel single-incision approach is a major advance as it leaves the patient with virtually no visible scar, when performed trans-umbilically, since the belly-button hides the incision site. Post-operative pain seems to be less than traditional open or laparoscopic surgery.

A single incision means slightly reduced risk of infection than a recovery from multiple incisions,” explained Dr Talwar.
