Lohegaon airport will get four aerobridges
Indian Express: As part of its upgradation work, the Lohegaon International Airport will get four aerobridges that will connect the airport terminals directly to the aircrafts, in order to facilitate boarding and disembarking of passengers. However, it will take at least six months for these jetways to become functional.
At present, passengers at the Pune airport have to board an aircraft by walking along the ground-level tarmac and climbing a set of movable stairs, or by descending airstairs. An aerobridge, also known as passenger boarding bridge, is an enclosed, movable connector which extends from the airport terminal gate to the airplane thus enabling passengers to board and disembark without having to go outside.
“It will take at least six months to complete the work of these aerobridges. We are planning two aerobridges initially. There are two parts in the making of these bridges. First is the construction of aerolinks, which is done with reinforced cement concrete. Work on these aerolinks is in full swing at the airport now. Whereas the fabrication of electrically-operated and movable bridges is being done at factories elsewhere,” said Sanjay Dulare, a senior official from the Pune Airport Director’s office.
These four aerobridges will be connected to the terminal at the one end and the aircraft at the other. At the airport terminal, the bridge is connected to a portal in the terminal wall behind the gate desk. Once the boarding of airplane starts, passengers can hand in their boarding passes to the gate’s attendant and enter the aerobridge.
From inside, an aerobridge has a narrow and lighted passage, without any doors. However, one of the disadvantages of these bridges is that they restrict aircraft parking to the spots immediately adjacent to the terminal.
