Inter-school competition on solid waste management
Sakaal Times: The Sakal Social Foundation (SSF) and Vidya Sahakari Bank have jointly organised an inter-school competition intended to make school-going children to think and act on the burning issue of the city’s solid waste management. The competition is open for standard VII, VIII and IX students from Marathi, English and Hindi medium schools.
The city’s waste management has become a serious issue, since residents of Urali Devachi and Phursungi have refused garbage to be offloaded at dumpsites near their villages. Even as the Pune Municipal Corporation and the government have launched intensive efforts to find out a permanent solution within six months, following an ultimatum given by the villagers, the citizens also need to join the initiative to make it a success. The competition, to be held in two phases, is being organised to create such an awareness among future citizens. Participants are expected to write a well-researched essay and make a presentation on waste-management.
Each participating school can send a maximum of three teams, one each from each standard, comprising 8 to 10 students. The winning group from each school will be awarded a cash prize and a certificate.
The winning teams from all the schools will compete in the second phase of the competition, which will be held separately for Marathi, Hindi and English medium schools. The first ranking school from each of the mediums will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 10,000, runners-up will get Rs 7,000 and second runners- up Rs 5,000.
All the participants in both the phases will receive certificates. Experts in the field of waste management will form the panel of judges. The SSF has appealed to the schools to participate in large numbers.
