Forest department to distribute 20 lakh saplings to warkaris
Indian Express: In order to create awareness on environment issues, the district social forestry department on Wednesday started distributing 20 lakh seedlings to be planted all over the state.
“This is the best occasion to reach to maximum public in promoting awareness on environment. Thus, the department has taken initiative of distributing seeds to the warkaris, followers of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram, walking to Pandharpur,” Subhash Badve, deputy director, Social Forestry Department, Pune, said.
The department will put up a stall at Wadkinallah near Dive ghat wherein 20 lakh seeds of Nimboli, Karanj, tamarind and bamboo packed in 10,000 packets would be distributed to warkaris.
The idea is that the warkaris can sow the seeds in their farms or anywhere else, he said adding a tree plantation program is also organized at Dive village.
On behalf of the department, Badve said member of Harit Sena, school students spread across the state, would hold put up posters on environment awareness.
