Manhole covers will play havoc during monsoon
Mid-day: Most of the manhole covers in the city are not aligned to roads and will play havoc during monsoon.
With monsoons just round the corner, MiD DAY notifies bikers to get ready for bumpy rides as most of the manhole covers in the city, which are not aligned with the roads, will continue to play havoc during the rains.
Besides, the roads in Peths (Sadashiv, Ghorpadi, Kasba, Shanivar, Somvar, Mangalwar) are not only full of such manhole covers but are also infested with potholes.
Countering the pre-monsoon work that’s going on in the city, Vivek Velankar, president of Sajag Nagri Manch, said, “The contractors, while doing the tarring work, are supposed to align the manhole covers with the surface of the road. However, they don’t do that which leads to uneven roads that cause inconvenience to motorists.”
He added that the responsibility for this lacuna lies with the PMC’s Road Department Administration.
While Vivek Kharwadkar, additional civil engineer (Roads) said, “The reason behind the poor condition of manhole lids is that they were put up long ago and have become frail now. Thus, they can’t withstand the load heavy traffic.” He added that these manhole covers should be replaced at the earliest.
Besides, Kharwadkar said, “Owing to the heavy traffic that plies on the city roads, the work of repairing the manholes and putting new covers will be done only after the rains.” He added that the civic body has satisfactorily completed the rain-related work and is putting up a Complaint Redressal Cell to attend to complaints from citizens.
