Online admission will be conducted in Pune next year
Indian Express: The state government’s plan to conduct the admission process for Class XI from the 2010-11 academic year won’t include Pune this year. Admissions will be conducted online only in Mumbai the year. It is likely to be replicated in Pune next year onwards.
Confirming this, State Education Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said, “Admissions in Pune will be conducted following last year’s process.” The state government had decided that the admission to Class XI will be online in Mumbai. The decision was taken in view of the fact that, in the absence of a centralised admission process in Mumbai, students had to rush from one college to the other for admission. Online process would streamline the process.
Vikhe-Patil said the online admission was aimed at reducing chaos. “We were considering online admission in Pune and other divisions this year onwards. But the education department has decided to take the Mumbai experience into consideration and accordingly replicate it across the state next year onwards,” he said.
Sources said the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) that is providing technical assistance for the process in Mumbai had forwarded a proposal to the deputy director, education department, Pune division, four months back to make the admission process of Class XI online in Pune. “We did not get any response from the office in Pune,” said a senior MKCL officer.
In Pune, the Class XI admission has been taking place in a centralised process for the last 15 years and is mostly hassle-free. But the online format is expected to further ease the process. Though principals of various colleges had responded positively to the online admission proposal at a meeting last week, it was alleged that a lobby of teachers and data entry operators involved in the admission process were against it.
“In a city like Pune, where students are techno-savvy, the idea should have been upheld right from the beginning. But some sections have vested interest in the present admission process and so they opposed the idea,” said a lecturer from a reputable college.
