A library dedicated to boost entrepreneurship
Indian Express: With an aim to boost entrepreneurship amongst technology innovators, Venture Centre, the technology business incubator of National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) has set up a library dedicated to intellectual property, technology commercialisation and venture finance. Called as the venture centre library, it is scheduled to be open for public access from next month.
“Currently we have about 500 books on technology and innovation management, entrepreneurship and venture development, issues related to company formation, registration, local rules and regulations and so on. We plan to increase this number to 1000 within the next year,” said Kaushik Gala, business development manager with Venture Centre. He added that their subscription for foreign periodicals like Technology Review, Chemical Weekly, Journal of Technology Transfer and Commercialisation would be in place soon.
What makes this 1200 sq feet library unique from those existing in the city is that it gives all information needed to start a new science and technology based ventures under one roof. The books and periodicals here are also such that they are not easily available in Pune, said Gala. He added, “We would also like for an informal tie-up with at least 11 libraries in the city like the National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) library, Gokhale Institute library, Indian Law Society library and so on for sharing of resources.”
The library further plans to raise funds to create a database of market research reports. “The subscription of few well known market research reports can run into a few lakhs of rupees every year, which is not affordable to an individual entrepreneur. We are looking at sponsors to bring down these subscription rates,” said Gala. Other than that the library will also hold workshops and seminars for children and students along with existing and probable entrepreneurs.
The library membership is available at an introductory fee of Rs 400 per year for browsing and reading rights along with an additional Rs 400 per year for issuing books. “Students will get 50 percent discount in these fees,” Gala said. The library, located at NCL’s Innovation park campus, also has a portal www.vcentrelibrary.org where one can suggest books that can be incorporated in the database.
The Venture Centre was started in 2006 with an aim to provide space, facilities and services to new start-ups. The library has received aid from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), Council for Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR) among others.
