Eight collection points for bio-medical waste
Times of India: Eight places have been identified in the city for collecting bio-medical waste (BMW) generated at clinics. All these collection points will become functional from May 11.
It has been a long-pending demand of over 7,000 doctors in the city to increase collection points to facilitate easy collection of waste.
“Considering the doctors’ demand, the new operator of the common bio-medical waste treatment and incineration facility at the Kailash crematorium has identified eight places,” said D D Chandakkar, deputy health official of the PMC.
The identified places are Dhankawadi ward office, Katraj (2 pm to 3.50 pm); Bibvevadi ward office, near Utsav building, Sahakarnagar (4.10 pm to 6 pm); Aundh ward office (2 pm to 3.45 pm), in front of Ghole road ward office (4.10 pm to 6 pm); Warje-Karvenagar ward office (2 pm to 3.50 pm), near Rajaram bridge, Sinhagad road (4.10 pm to 6 pm); Hadapsar Maternity Home, Hadapsar (2 pm to 3.45 pm); Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Yerawada (4.15 pm to 6 pm), informed Pradip Mulay, director of the Posco Environmental Solutions, the new operator of the facility at Kailash crematorium.
“Besides these collection points, general practitioners can give their medical waste to collection vans allocated for major hospitals,” said Chandakkar.
Around 1,200 general practitioners have subscribed to the facility so far. “It is mandatory for doctors to adhere to the norms of bio-medical waste management. Strict action will be initiated against violators,” he said.
