You may soon have to pay for driving on MG Road
Sakaal Times: Believe it or not, you may soon have to pay every time you drive on M G Road, one of the central roads in Camp: The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB), in its next general body meeting, is likely to table a proposal to introduce a congestion tax on all vehicles including two-wheelers entering M G Road, on the lines of the London congestion charge.
Board administrator S K Sardana told Sakaal Times on Wednesday that traffic on M G Road, East Street and other parts was spiraling out of control despite efforts by the Board and traffic police. The administration was also flooded with complaints about parking woes of the public in those areas.
Sardana said the administration was examining proposals to solve the problem and one way was to turn M G Road vehicle free or introduce congestion tax to restrict the number of vehicles entering the road.
He said that the scheme was at a preliminary stage and would be tabled before the Board only after examination by the legal department. However, he said a detailed presentation would be given to the Board president and elected members on the merits and demerits of the proposal.
In February last year, the Board, in consultation with traffic police, decided to bar movement of heavy vehicles between 6 am to 11 pm through Gen Vaidya Marg (Old Anderson Road), Prince of Wales Drive, Ashoka Marg and Prince of Wales Road.
In March, as part of its ongoing drive to decongest and regulate traffic, the Board felt that basement parking be opened in some quarters to smoothen vehicular movement. Board President Brigadier R J Sharma had suggested creation of multilevel parking in vacant zones.
