New ‘corportate look’ for heritage building of district collectorate

Sakaal Times: The British-era heritage building of the district collectorate in the city, as well as its other extensions, will be demolished to pave way for new ‘corporate look’ multi-storeyed buildings. The old buildings on the premises of the divisional commissionerate will also be replaced by modern structures, though the historic Council Hall building will be spared.

District guardian minister Ajit Pawar gave his nod for the proposal at a meeting on Thursday. The proposal was mooted as the existing office space cannot accommodate the growing staff and visitors’ strength at the collectorate and divisional commissionerate.

The main building at the collectorate was constructed in 1880. It housed the office of the first district collector of Pune, S G Barve, after 1947. Several new extensions were added in subsequent years to the premises spread over six acres.

The new building complex will have the main collector office, other offices, an underground and multi-level parking lot, and a conference hall.

A separate area will be allotted for rallies converging on the collectorate.

At the divisional commissionerate, two new buildings have been planned in place of the existing two-storeyed building adjoining the Council Hall and staff quarters.

In its first step towards becoming a paperless and e-district, the collector office has got rid of over 12 lakh old files and documents weighing 88 metric tonnes.

District collector Chandrakant Dalvi on Friday said that the drive to destroy the files, which had piled up for years but lost their utility, was undertaken across various revenue offices including tehsil and land records.

The documents were classified into A, B, C, C-1 and D. Those classified under D category were destroyed, he said, adding that this was a step towards total computerisation of revenue offices in district by next year.

Accordingly, every employee will be provided with a computer, while all the 77 circle officers in the district will be given laptops.
