City police goes hi-tech
Times of India: Following the audacious attack by 10 Pakistani terrorists, who were armed with hi-tech weapons and equipment, in Mumbai in November last, the Pune police do not want to leave anything to chance. The force has decided to purchase sophisticated equipment to meet the new-age security challenges.
A committee formed under deputy commissioner of police (special branch) Ravindra Sengaonkar will purchase the equipment, including letter bomb detector, bomb box, mobile jammers and video surveillance system, approximately worth Rs 10 crore.
Most of these equipment will be provided to the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) of the city police and traffic branch by the end of next month.
The city police had received Rs 14 crore for the purpose during the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in October last year. “We had very less time during the CYG to issue tenders. So we started the process soon after the Games,” Sengaonkar said, adding, “The process will be completed before March 31 and by the end of next month, our force will be equipped with all these sophisticated accessories.”
The equipment to be procured include letter bomb detectors to spot potential explosive material sent through letters, deep search metal detectors (DSMD) to detect buried mines, among others. For the first time, the city police will get mobile as well as frequency jammers. The police will purchase equipment like bomb box, bomb blanket, bomb basket (for disposing of the bomb) and two bomb suits, especially for the BDDS. At present, the BDDS has only one such suit. The police will get as many as 80 bullet-proof jackets.
Tenders have been floated for the traffic department as well. To man traffic posts at night, the traffic police will be provided with fluorescent jackets and light-emitting batons. They will also get breath analysers and vehicle-mounted speed guns.
