Latest German technology for sperm injection launched in the city
Sakaal Times: For the first time in the city, the Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI) technology has been launched at Ruby Hall In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Endoscopy Centre.
Demonstrating the IMSI technique on Saturday, chief of Ruby Hall IVF and Endoscopy centre Dr Sunita Tandulwadkar said, “Earlier, during infertility treatment, the Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) were done with low magnification, where embryologists used to choose sperm just by chance or based on their perception. There are hundreds of types of abnormalities of sperm, however, they could not detect it.”
Tandulwadkar said that with the latest German IMSI technology, the sperm could be observed more closely with 700X magnification as against 400X of ICSI.
Here the morphology of the sperm can be clearly visualised and a good reading of abnormality can be noted leading to formation of good embryo.
Using the technique, the vacuolar structure of the sperm can be recognised and strictly morphologically the best sperm is selected for fertilisation. With this, the abortion rate is reduced increasing the take home baby rate.
In case of infertility, in 40 per cent cases males are responsible and equally are the females. In 10 per cent cases both are responsible while 10 per cent cases unexplained where both of them are normal but still facing infertility problem, she said. The IMSI technology would helpful to 20 per cent of couples undergoing Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART).
The normal couples undergoing natural reproduction can also use the technique to test out semen for genetic abnormalities. Ruby Hall is the third hospital in the country that has introduced the German technology.
Dr K B Grant, founder and managing trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic and Dr Regina Klose from Germany, who was instrumental in pioneering this technology, were present on the occasion.
