IUCAA unveils an organic waste converter plant
Times Of India: On the occasion of its 20th Foundation Day, the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) unveiled an organic waste converter plant on Monday. The plant was inaugurated by municipal commissioner Pravinsinh Pardeshi. The plant, built at the expenditure of Rs 9 lakh, can convert about 100 kg of organic waste into high-grade manure.
Speaking on the occasion, Pardeshi congratulated Naresh Dadhich, director, IUCAA, and said other institutions should follow the footsteps of the IUCAA. The initiative to install the plant was taken by K C Nair, senior administrative officer, IUCAA, and was carried out by Shankar Chavan, estate manager. “Initially, the manure produced at the plant will be used in the gardens of the centre and the excess produce will be made available to other institutions,” Nair said.
“It takes about 11 days to generate the first produce. After that, it is put in the converter plant. Later, it’s an assembly-line production,” Chavan added.
IUCAA, which entered its 20th year on Monday, is working on major expansion plans. “Besides a very strong visitors’ programme and organisation of workshops and conferences at various levels, we would also have a strong doctorate and post-doctorate programme. All this goes into building a conducive and exciting academic environment, which is the heart of an institute,” Dadhich said.
