Prisoners to perform in a one-act play at the youth festival

Times of India, Pune: Eleven prisoners, serving life-term in the Paithan jail, will present a one-act play at the youth festival to be held at the Tilak smarak mandir on September 30.

The event has been organised by the Yashavantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU). Director of Pune centre of YCMOU Sharankumar Limbale claims it could be the first stage show by prisoners ever in the state.

Written by Shivaji Salunkhe, a prisoner at the Paithan jail, the one-act play ‘Savdhan’ will include four prisoners from the Yerawada jail, said Limbale.

The four prisoners will perform some songs and mono-act at the gathering of the open university. All these prisoners are studying with the YCMOU.

Besides the prisoners, close to 150 students, pursuing education through YCMOU, are participating in the festival. Winners will qualified for the inter-university festival- ‘Indradhanushya’-to be held at Nasik.

Commenting on the university’s initiative, Limbale said, “Many prisoners from Pune, Nasik, Kolhapur, Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Amravati who are pursuing education through the YCMOU. These people should not be treated different from the society. Such initiatives will help reduce gap between the society and prisoners,” he said.
