ICICI Lombard protest at Ruby Hall Clinic for the death of their area manager

Expressindia.com: Around 100 employees of ICICI Lombard stormed the Ruby Hall Clinic, one of the city’s prominent hospitals, on Sunday morning, accusing its doctors of causing the death of their area manager, by refusing to admit him and dismissing his chest pain as “nautanki.” Twenty-four year-old Amol Shetty, area manager and customer care executive of ICICI Lombard, experienced acute chest pain while playing a cricket match between his company and Reliance on Saturday. His team-mates and colleagues immediately rushed him to Ruby Hall Clinic where he was reportedly examined by “a couple of trainees.”

“We were expecting a senior doctor to take a look at him, but the trainees who examined him claimed that there was nothing wrong with him. They gave him an injection and some antibiotics but refused to get him admitted to the hospital,” said Darshan Jage, the regional manager of ICICI Lombard.

The employees said that after repeated requests, the trainee doctor directed them to get an X-ray done and again claimed that there was nothing wrong with him. “We had arrived at the hospital around 6.30 pm and it was almost three hours later that a senior doctor, Sharad Yadav, arrived and began examining him. Shetty was writhing in pain, but the doctor said it was nautanki. The doctor refused to admit Shetty… he said there was nothing wrong…,” said Jage.

The employees then took Shetty home and he died in his sleep. The enraged employees thronged the hospital premises this morning seeking for a meeting with Dr Yadav. They were allegedly not given any contact details.

A police team was deployed at the hospital to control the situation.

The police said Shetty’s body would be sent for post-mortem and the next course of action would be decided on only after report is available. “Our legal team is in the city and will be filing an FIR at the local police station,” said Jage.

Meanwhile, Shetty’s parents arrived at the hospital from their native home in Jaisinghpur, Kolhapur, in the afternoon. One of his sisters, who collapsed after hearing the news, was admitted to the hospital.
Ruby Hall Clinic medical director Sujata Malik told journalists that there was no negligence by their doctors but a probe would be initiated. “We will take action against the doctors if they are found guilty,” she said.
